MetaVis Cloud Classifier 2010 Preview

August 23, 2010

MetaVis Cloud Classifier 2010 is a SharePoint 2010 component that allows to assign field values to many selected documents located in SharePoint 2010 libraries at once. This component is available for any user of a SharePoint site for any library in the site collection where it is activated. It is completely integrated with SharePoint security model and embedded seamlessly into SharePoint WEB interface. In a sense, Cloud Classifier 2010 is like a standard Edit Properties dialog but it applies to all selected documents.

MetaVis Cloud Classifier 2010 allows SharePoint users to enhance documents metadata in an easy and organic way on a mass scale. This, in turn, improves documents find-ability, search, accessibility and navigation through SharePoint libraries.

MetaVis Cloud Classifier 2010 is very easy to use. First, select documents to tag in any place that allows document selection like library or list view WEB Part and click Classify button in SharePoint ribbon toolbar.

Then specify new field values for any of the fields that appear on the Classify screen and continue the wizard.

At the end, all values specified on the Classify screen will be applied to all documents selected in the list when Classify dialog was called.

This is just a basic use of MetaVis Cloud Classifier for SharePoint. In a more advanced scenario the user may change content types of the selected documents (remember, there might be many of them) and specify field values for this new content type:

Values for some fields could be copied from the other fields available in the existing metadata.

Coupled with SharePoint 2010 list navigation infrastructure and key filters MetaVis Cloud Classifier becomes a very powerful tool to perform metadata enhancement and data classification in SharePoint sites. Here, we select all documents pre-tagged with MK Region field contains China to tag them with new metadata, change their content type or add more values.

New Ribbon Interface in MetaVis Architect Suite for SharePoint

August 19, 2010

We recently updated MetaVis Architect Suite with new Microsoft style ribbon interface. Classical era artifacts like application wide menu and toolbar are gone and new wave large icons grouped in ribbon tab pages, sections and drop-down choices came into MetaVis graphic interface to match the updated look of the latest SharePoint 2010 release.

Below is the screen shot with a brief overview of the general application actions:

Architect ribbon page allows to focus user attention on the site structure related tasks.

MetaVis Migrator section in ribbon emphasizes basic migration / classification activities and allows to use them with few less clicks than before.

It is worth to note that classical GUI with menu and toolbar is still available by switching it back in the View section of the Ribbon for those who fancy menu navigation or larger real estate especially on small screens.

Copy Master Pages and Page Layouts between SharePoint Site Collections with MetaVis Migrator

August 9, 2010

Master pages contain controls that are shared across multiple pages and page layouts, such as navigation, search, or language-preference for multilingual sites. Page layouts contain field controls and Web Parts. By using master pages, you can provide a consistent look and feel for your site. You can use master pages to position items that must be shared by all pages, such as navigational controls, company logos, and copyright notices.

Mater pages and page layouts are regular documents located in special SharePoint lists called galleries. This property makes it possible to manage them using MetaVis Migrator . Below is a brief example of how to copy master pages between SharePoint site collections.

First, load both source and target site collections into MetaVis Migrator so that they will be accessible in MetaVis Navigation Tree on the left. Then right click on the Lists node of the source site and select Enable Hidden Lists options.

This option will make site collection galleries visible in MetaVis Navigation Tree. To copy master pages and page layouts double click on Master Page Gallery list, select master pages that you need to copy and copy them into the clipboard (right click and select Copy or use keyboard combination Ctrl-C on Windows or Command-C on Mac).

After this navigate to target site collection loaded into MetaVis Navigation Tree, enable hidden lists in there and perform Paste into Master Page Gallery of the target site collection.

When the copy process is completed the new master pages become available in the destination site collection and could be used in Site Properties Master Page specification:
